How to Measure Your Lawn Area (Step-by-Step Guide)

How to Measure Your Lawn Area Before Ordering Grass

Before ordering LM Grass, Kikuyu, Artificial Grass, or Lawn Dressing, it’s important to know the exact size of your area in square metres (m²).

At Lawnitex, we price our products per square metre, so measuring correctly helps you:

  • Order the correct quantity
  • Avoid delays
  • Meet minimum order requirements
  • Get accurate delivery scheduling

This guide will show you exactly how to measure your lawn area step-by-step.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Measuring tape (at least 5–30 metres)
  • Notepad or phone notes
  • Calculator
  • Pen or pencil

Optional:

  • Google Maps (for large properties)
  • Laser distance measurer

Measuring a Square or Rectangle Lawn

Most lawns are simple rectangular shapes.

Step 1:

Measure the length (in metres)

Step 2:

Measure the width (in metres)

Step 3:

Multiply:
Length × Width = Total Square Metres (m²)

Example:

10m × 5m = 50m²

So you would order 50 square metres of grass.

Measuring an Irregular-Shaped Lawn

If your lawn is not a perfect rectangle:

Step 1:

Divide the lawn into smaller rectangles or squares.

Step 2:

Measure each section separately.

Step 3:

Add all sections together.

Example:

Section 1: 6m × 4m = 24m²
Section 2: 3m × 5m = 15m²

Total = 39m²

Measuring a Circular Lawn

For circular areas:

Formula: π × radius²

Simplified:
3.14 × radius × radius

Example:
Radius = 9m

3.14 × 9 × 9 = 254.34m²

Rounded = 255m²

Using Google Maps (For Large Properties)

For large or commercial properties:

  1. Open Google Maps
  2. Right-click your property
  3. Select “Measure Distance”
  4. Outline the lawn area
  5. Google will calculate total area

This is ideal for estates or commercial spaces.
